An official Census 2011 detail of Thanjavur, a district of Tamil Nadu has been released by Directorate of Census Operations in Tamil Nadu. Enumeration of key persons was also done by census officials in Thanjavur District of Tamil Nadu.

In 2011, Thanjavur had population of 2,405,890 of which male and female were 1,182,416 and 1,223,474 respectively. In 2001 census, Thanjavur had a population of 2,216,138 of which males were 1,096,638 and remaining 1,119,500 were females. Thanjavur District population constituted 3.33 percent of total Maharashtra population. In 2001 census, this figure for Thanjavur District was at 3.55 percent of Maharashtra population.

The initial provisional data released by census India 2011, shows that density of Thanjavur district for 2011 is 705 people per sq. km. In 2001, Thanjavur district density was at 638 people per sq. km. Thanjavur district administers 3,411 square kilometers of areas.
Average literacy rate of Thanjavur in 2011 were 82.64 compared to 75.45 of 2001. If things are looked out at gender wise, male and female literacy were 89.04 and 76.50 respectively. For 2001 census, same figures stood at 84.47 and 66.70 in Thanjavur District. Total literate in Thanjavur District were 1,790,998 of which male and female were 944,264 and 846,734 respectively.
